One phenomenon that has brought us considerable joy is the sight of numerous horsemen riding throughout Rincon, Anasco, and surrounding communities. These aren’t your everyday horses, however. Puerto Rico is home to the paso fino horse breed. Originally imported from Spain, these horses have a smooth, natural four-beat, lateral ambling gate. Locals can be seen riding and grazing their horses everywhere (and I do mean, everywhere). Heading down to the beach for the day(?)–watch out for those riders on the sand [see evidence to the left]. Walking through a neighborhood(?)–they’re grazing out in the yard. Going downtown to shop(?)–there are riders along the main streets. Out for a round of golf(?)–yup, horses are here, too. My nightmare would be to hit a beautiful drive right down the middle of the fairway, only to find it mired in a pile of paso fino product. In Puerto Rico, the odds of this occurring are far better than hitting the local lottery or shooting a hole in one.   The best place to experience the beautiful cadence of paso fino hoofbeats is to attend one of the local competitions, where the horses perform on small boardwalks. Once you’ve heard that rhythmic paso finosound, you’ll never forget it.
