One of the lessons I learned during my formative years was, “put your money where your mouth is.” As I interpreted it, the axiom was saying that I should follow through on promises. Long ago, I devoted my energies toward improving the status of the tourism industry. As a pet project, I chose  1950s-1960s icons, especially motels. I have written two books about motels, but didn’t feel assured that I was having an impact. Then, several years ago, I began to work closely with a cadre of people who shared my passion. Most of these were people who owned or operated motels, diners, traditional theme parks, and the like. I love teaching, research, and writing; but, working with these people to develop the Route 3 Retrotour has been a highlight of my career. I have witnessed a bunch of wonderful people putting aside personal goals to work toward the development of a nostalgic experience, one that will add value to their individual properties. This leads to three recommendations that–I promise–will bring you much nachas: 1) delve into something that you’ve secretly, or openly, wanted to do for years; 2) get to know others who share your interest–I mean really get to know them; and 3) immediately insert money into your mouth (no need to wash the former first). By the way, please check out www.retrotournh.com, and you’ll see why I’m so excited. (Sretro groupee pic of Retrotour group presenting at 2014 NH Governor’s Conference on Tourism).

  1. Great group! great job. I do thing that your group orientations are legitimate and should be encouraged. Our past is very important to us, then we have to preserve those heritage, historical assets. I would love to see people enjoying the group.
