Popo2Most people loved Superman when we were kids, but my favorite character was Lois Lane. As she always told Perry White and Jimmy Olson, “I’ll go anywhere for a story.” Lois was my kind of person. Years ago, I found myself in some isolated communities in Alaska, all for the purpose of digging up information on potential tourism destinations. On one occasion, I found myself in a community (Chevak) with one public toilet–a honey bucket that hadn’t been emptied for days! Another time, we were in a hamlet (Minto) that didn’t welcome white people without an invitation. Unfortunately, the person who had invited us flew out just as we drove into town. To make matters worse, the front tire on our vehicle had developed a flat tire. They say, “whatever doesn’t kill you makes you strong.” As these next two pictures show, I still believe that the show must go on. The subject was willing to talk, but not anxious to get out of the pool; so . . . .

  1. Dear Dr. Okrant,

Thank you so very much for sharing this great story with us.
We really appreciate all the time you are putting in tourism research. Your story is a real Professor and reseacher job. It’s some time a risky job but very fun.
