Bless you
There is a delightful tradition here in Puerto Rico. In this culture, the young actually respect their elderly citizens. One manifestation of this is the bendicion. A few days ago, I was enjoying lunch at a local bar/restaurant, with my very good friend, Mike. Like me, Mike has joined the Medicare set. Half way through our meal, a young man walked up to our table and shook hands with both of us. While he held Mike’s right hand in his, he softly spoke a few words in Spanish to Mike. I soon learned he had requested that Mike honor him with a bendicion, or blessing. Mike’s response, “dios te bendiga,” was received with a nod, smile, and “gracias.” What a wonderful way of showing respect for the older citizens of one’s society. Have any of you had a similar experience where you were brought up, live, or vacation today?
I grew up in the same culture. Olders are the source Of history, and they diserved respect. Thank you for your important blog.
Ali, feel free to tell us about similar customs. There is much to be learned from cultures that adhere to traditions like this.
That’s truly a nice story. I’ve never heard of such a custom. I’ll be eager to read more comments on your blog regarding this.
