Read full article by George L. Geers AAA Northern New England Journey March/April 2012 Perhaps it’s Northern New England’s key ingredients that make it such a perfect setting for mystery: brutal cold, wicked heat, damned rain, damned snow; colorful, independent cusses who threaten “don’t tread on me”; a landscape of old farms and mansions that writers paint as foreboding and deadly, with plenty of people who need to be dispatched and plenty of places to stash them: Take the second road off Route 7, then go a half mile up the logging road and dig until the crime disappears… … Each state in the region boasts authors who have mined this brooding backdrop for literary gold. New Hampshire can point to the late William Tapply, who lived in the state and authored more than 40 books, most in the Brady Coyne and Stoney Calhoun mystery series based in New England. Tom Eslick has the best-selling White Mountain mystery series. Susan Howard Solar has a series that includes the Lethal Leaf Peepers, and Mark Okrant, professor of tourism management at Plymouth State University, has crafted a series of home turf mysteries that take place at the state’s grand hotels: The Balsams, Mount Washington Hotel, and the Mountain View Grand Resort.
